Mattress disposal in London: your options and costs
Mattresses are awkward to move, too big for any bin, and should never be left on the street. Here is how to get rid of one in London and nearby towns, and what each option costs.
Can I put a mattress in the bin?
No. A mattress is bulky waste. Leaving it next to the bins or on the pavement counts as fly-tipping, even if it is outside your own home.
Your options
- Retailer take-back. Many retailers offer to take your old mattress away when they deliver a new one, often for a fee. Ask when you order.
- Council bulky waste collection. Most councils collect mattresses for a fee. You usually have to bring it outside yourself.
- Recycling centre. Fine if you have a vehicle big enough. Some sites need a booking.
- Junk removal. We collect from any room. One mattress starts from £84 plus £30 for the mattress, including VAT.
Can mattresses be recycled?
Many can. The steel springs, foam and fabric can be separated at specialist sites. A mattress that is very wet, soiled or damaged may not be accepted for recycling, so it goes for disposal instead.
Getting it ready
- Strip the bedding and remove anything from under the bed.
- If the mattress is wet or soiled, wrap it in a mattress bag or plastic sheeting.
- If the bed frame is going too, add it to the same load. Only the mattress has the extra charge.
- Tell us the floor and whether there is a lift.
